Some of the common signs and symptoms of spinal cord injury include:

  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Weakness in the arms and/or legs
  • Severe pain or pressure in the neck or back
  • Decreased sensation in the arms and/or legs
  • Unusual lumps along the spine and difficulty breathing
If not treated immediately, there can be long-term complications such as:
  • Spasticity, joint contracture
  • Inability to regulate blood pressure or body temperature
  • Increased risk of heart or lung problems and persistent pain
  • Increased risk of heart or lung problems and sexual dysfunction
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control and paralysis in the arms or legs
